1. Garcinia Cambogia Extract
Garcinia cambogia was introduced to postdocs and became popular worldwide. Introducing the Oz Show.

It is a small green fruit shaped like a pumpkin.

The peel contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA). This is the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia extract, which is marketed as a diet pill.

How it works: Animal studies show that it inhibits fat-producing enzymes in the body and increases serotonin levels, which may help reduce cravings (1, 2).

Efficacy: A study involving 130 people compared garcinia cambogia to fake pills. There were no differences in body weight or body fat percentage between groups (3).

A 2011 review of 12 studies of garcinia cambogia found that it resulted in an average weight loss of about 0.88 kg (2 lbs) over a few weeks ( 4Trusted Source ).

Side effects: There are no reports of serious side effects, but there are some reports of mild digestive problems.

Bottom line:
While garcinia cambogia can cause moderate weight loss, the effects are small and unlikely to even be noticed.

2. Hydroxyl Cleavage
Hydroxycut has been around for over a decade and is currently one of the most popular weight loss supplements in the world.

There are several types, but the most common is simply called “Hydroxycut”.

How it works: It contains several ingredients that are said to aid weight loss, including caffeine and some botanical extracts.

Side effects: If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may experience anxiety, nervousness, tremors, nausea, diarrhea, and irritability.

Bottom line:
Unfortunately, there is only one study on this supplement and no data on long-term effectiveness. Further research is required.

3. Caffeine
Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world (6).

It occurs naturally in coffee, green tea, and dark chocolate, and is added to many processed foods and beverages.

Caffeine is a well-known metabolism booster and is often added to commercial weight loss supplements.

How it works: Short-term studies show that caffeine can boost metabolism by 3-11% and increase fat burning by up to 29% (7, 8, 9, 10).

Efficacy: There is also some research showing that caffeine can cause mild weight loss in humans (11, 12).

Side effects: In some people, high amounts of caffeine can cause anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, nausea, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Caffeine is also addictive and can affect sleep quality.

There’s really no need to take caffeine supplements or pills. The best sources are high-quality coffee and green tea, which also have antioxidants and other health benefits.

Bottom line:
Caffeine can boost metabolism and boost fat burning in the short term. However, tolerance to the effects develops rapidly.

4. Orlistat (Ali)
Orlistat is a drug that is sold over the counter under the name Alli and is available only as a prescription for Xenical.

How it works: This diet pill inhibits the breakdown of fat in your gut, allowing you to absorb fewer calories from fat.

Efficacy: According to a large review of 11 studies, orlistat may increase weight loss by up to 6 pounds (2.7 kg) compared to the fake pill (13).

Other benefits: In one study, orlistat has been shown to slightly lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 37% (14, 15).

Side effects: This drug has many digestive side effects, including loose stools, oily stools, gas, frequent bowel movements that are difficult to control, and more. It can also lead to deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K.

It is generally recommended to stick to a low-fat diet while taking orlistat to minimize side effects.

Interestingly, a low-carb diet (without medication) has been shown to have the same effect as a combination of orlistat and a low-fat diet (16).

Bottom line:
Orlistat, also called Alli or Xenical, can reduce the amount of fat you absorb from food and help you lose weight. It has many side effects, some of which are very uncomfortable.

5. Raspberry Ketones
Raspberry ketones are a substance found in raspberries and are responsible for their distinctive smell.

A synthetic version of raspberry ketones is sold as a weight loss supplement.

How it works: In isolated rat fat cells, raspberry ketone increases lipolysis and increases levels of a hormone called adiponectin, which is thought to be involved in weight loss (17).

Efficacy: There isn’t a single human study of raspberry ketones, but one rat study using high doses showed that they can reduce weight gain (18).

Side effects: They can make your hiccups smell like raspberries.

 

Bottom line:
There is no evidence that raspberry ketone causes weight loss in humans, and rat studies have shown it to be effective in high doses.

6. Green Coffee Bean Extract
Green coffee beans are just plain, unroasted coffee beans.

They contain two substances thought to aid weight loss, caffeine and chlorogenic acid.

How it works: Caffeine increases fat burning, and chlorogenic acid slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gut.

Effectiveness: Multiple human studies suggest that green coffee bean extract may aid in weight loss (19, 20).

A review of 3 studies found that supplements allowed people to lose 5.4 pounds (2.5 kg) more than a placebo (a fake pill) (21).

Other benefits: Green coffee bean extract may help lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. It’s also high in antioxidants (22, 23, 24, 25).

Side effects: It may have the same side effects as caffeine. The chlorogenic acid it contains can also cause diarrhea, and some people may be allergic to green coffee beans (26).

Bottom line:
Green coffee bean extract may cause moderate weight loss, but keep in mind that many studies are sponsored by industry.

7. Glucomannan
Glucomannan is a fiber present in the root of elephant yam, also known as konjac.

How it works: Glucomannan absorbs water and turns into a gel. It “sits” in your gut, promoting satiety and allowing you to eat fewer calories (27).

Effectiveness: Three human studies have shown that when combined with a healthy diet, glucomannan can help people lose 8-10 pounds (3.6-4.5 kg) in 5 weeks (28).

Other benefits: Glucomannan is a type of dietary fiber that feeds friendly bacteria in your gut. It also lowers blood sugar, blood cholesterol, and triglycerides and is very effective against constipation (29, 30, 31).

Side effects: It can cause gas, bloating, and loose stools, and interfere with some oral medications when taken at the same time.

It is important to take glucomannan with a glass of water about half an hour before meals. If you want to try it, Amazon has a great selection.

Bottom line:
Research consistently shows that fiber glucomannan can aid in weight loss when combined with a healthy diet. It can also improve various health indicators.

8. Melatrim
Meratrim is a relatively newcomer to the diet pill market.

It is a combination of two plant extracts that alter the metabolism of fat cells.

How it works: It allegedly makes it harder for fat cells to reproduce, reduces the amount of fat they absorb from the bloodstream, and helps them burn stored fat.

Efficacy: To date, only one study has been conducted on Meratrim. A total of 100 obese people were on a strict 2,000-calorie diet using Meratrim or fake pills (32).

After 8 weeks, the Meratrim group lost 11 pounds (5.2 kg) and lost 4.7 inches (11.9 cm) in waist circumference. They also improved quality of life and lowered blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Side Effects: No side effects reported.

Bottom line:
A study has shown that Meratrim can reduce weight and has many other health benefits. However, the study was industry-sponsored and requires further investigation.

9. Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract is a popular ingredient in many weight loss supplements.

This is because numerous studies have shown that the main antioxidant it contains, EGCG, supports fat burning.

How it works: Green tea extract is thought to increase the activity of norepinephrine, a hormone that helps you burn fat (33).

Efficacy: Numerous human studies have shown that green tea extract can increase fat burning and lead to fat loss, especially in the abdominal area (34, 35, 36, 37).

Side effects: Green tea extract is generally well tolerated. It contains some caffeine, which may cause symptoms in people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Also, all the health benefits of drinking green tea should apply to green tea extract as well.

Bottom line:
Green tea and green tea extracts can easily boost fat burning and help you lose belly fat.

10. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
Conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, has been a popular weight loss supplement for many years.

It’s a “healthier” trans fat that occurs naturally in fatty animal foods like cheese and butter.

How it works: CLA may reduce appetite, boost metabolism, and promote the breakdown of body fat (38, 39).

Efficacy: In a large review of 18 different studies, CLA resulted in a weight loss of approximately 0.2 lb (0.1 kg) per week for up to 6 months (40).

According to another review study in 2012, CLA can lose about 1.3 kilograms compared to fake pills (41).

Side Effects: CLA can cause a variety of digestive side effects and may have long-term harmful effects, possibly leading to fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and increased inflammation.

Bottom line:
CLA is an effective dietary supplement for weight loss, but it may have harmful long-term effects. Small weight loss is not worth the risk.

11. Forskolin
Forskolin, an extract from the mint family, is said to be effective for weight loss.

How it works: It is thought to increase levels of a compound called cAMP in cells, which may stimulate fat burning (42).

Efficacy: A study of 30 overweight and obese men showed that forskolin reduced body fat and increased muscle mass, but had no effect on weight. Another study of 23 overweight women found no effect

 

12. Bitter Orange/Synphrine
An orange called bitter orange contains the compound synephrine.

Synephrine is related to ephedrine, which was once a popular ingredient in various diet pill formulations.

However, ephedrine has been banned by the FDA as a weight loss ingredient due to serious side effects.

How it works: Synephrine has a similar mechanism to ephedrine, but is less potent. It reduces appetite and significantly increases fat burning (45).

Efficacy: Few studies have been conducted on synephrine, but many studies have shown that ephedrine can lead to significant short-term weight loss (46).

Side effects: Like ephedrine, synephrine can have serious heart-related side effects. It can also be addictive.

Bottom line:
Synephrine is a fairly powerful stimulant that may be effective for weight loss in the short term. However, the side effects can be severe and should only be used with extreme caution.

Additionally, there are many prescription weight loss pills that have been shown to be effective.

The most common are Contrave, Phentermine, and Qsymia.

Even prescription diet pills aren’t as good as you’d hope, according to a recent review study in 2014.

On average, they can help you lose up to 3-9% of your body weight compared to fake pills (47).

Remember, this can only be combined with a healthy weight loss diet. They are ineffective on their own and do little to address obesity.

Not to mention their many side effects.

However, I have to oppose orlistat because of its annoying side effects and CLA because of its detrimental effects on metabolic health.

This leaves us with glucomannan, green tea extract and caffeine.

These supplements may be beneficial, but the effects are modest at best.

Unfortunately, no supplements or pills are really good for weight loss.

They can give your metabolism a little boost and help you lose a few pounds, but unfortunately, that’s where it ends.

Cutting back on carbs and eating more protein is still the best way to lose weight and works better than all diet pills combined.
